Memphis Business Academy students at the 2018 Sustainable Schools Challenge Celebration

In 2015, Clean Memphis educators began working with Memphis Business Academy to provide hands-on STEM activities to their gifted students. They were one of our first institutions to achieve the Sustainable Schools Challenge certification, and our relationship has grown to include bi-weekly programming to students at their elementary, middle, and high schools.

This year, the Clean Memphis Education team is proud to work with Ms. Zan Brennan, NEXT and Clue teacher at MBA Middle. The 6th, 7th, and 8th graders are enjoying challenging curriculum delivered by Clean Memphis educator Augustus Gatlin. Gus’ innovative, thought-provoking lessons help students connect environmental issues to the direct impacts those issues have on their lives here in Memphis.

The MBA Clue class takes the lead on the maintaining the school’s Sustainable Schools Challenge certification. With their help, the Middle/High School campus has reduced energy usage over 30% in three years! During that time, they have worked hard to achieve the Silver level of certification and are now working towards Gold. This year, school leaders reduced significant energy costs by condensing the space used for Summer Academy, allowing the school to shut down almost an entire building.
